What Is Acetyl Farnesylcysteine?

Acetyl farnesylcysteine (AFC) is a synthetic molecule derived from farnesylcysteine, an amino acid derivative. It works by modulating G-protein coupled receptor signalling, a cellular communication pathway involved in inflammatory responses.

In skincare formulations, AFC functions as a skin-conditioning and anti-inflammatory agent. When applied topically, it helps to reduce localised inflammatory activity without the systemic effects associated with some traditional anti-inflammatory treatments.

How It Works

AFC operates by interfering with G-protein coupled receptor signalling, which plays a central role in how immune cells communicate and migrate to inflamed areas. By modulating this pathway, it reduces the recruitment of inflammatory cells (particularly neutrophils) to affected skin.

Research in animal models suggests that AFC also suppresses the production of chemokines—chemical messengers that signal inflammatory cells to gather in problem areas. This dual action helps suppress inflammation at multiple stages of the inflammatory cascade.

Clinical Evidence & References

In laboratory and animal models, topical AFC has demonstrated the ability to reduce acute skin inflammation, oedema and neutrophil infiltration. It has also shown promise in contact dermatitis models, suggesting potential benefit for allergic inflammatory responses. These effects appear to be localised to the application area.

However, human clinical data remains limited. Most evidence comes from cell-based and animal studies rather than controlled human trials. Further research is needed to establish optimal concentrations, efficacy timelines and long-term safety in diverse skin types and conditions.

How to Use

Incorporate AFC into your routine as directed by your product's instructions, typically as part of a serum or targeted treatment. For best results, apply to clean, dry skin. If using alongside other active ingredients, introduce gradually to monitor tolerance. Allow time for results—anti-inflammatory benefits typically develop over consistent use rather than immediate application.

Safety & Precautions

AFC is generally well-tolerated in skincare formulations. As with any active ingredient, perform a patch test first if you have very sensitive skin or are prone to reactions.
