Adeps Bovis

Adeps bovis, commonly known as beef tallow, is a solid fat rendered from cattle tissue. It is composed primarily of triglycerides and essential fatty acids, making it chemically similar to sebum and other natural skin lipids. Historically used in soap and cooking, tallow has recently gained interest in skincare formulation as an emollient ingredient.

In skincare products, adeps bovis functions as an occlusive and emollient, helping to soften the skin surface and reduce transepidermal water loss. Its fatty acid profile means it can integrate into the skin's lipid barrier, potentially supporting moisture retention.

Adeps bovis works primarily through its emollient and occlusive mechanisms. The triglycerides and fatty acids penetrate and coat the outer layers of skin, creating a hydrophobic barrier that reduces water evaporation. This is particularly useful in dry or compromised skin states where the lipid barrier is weakened.

Because tallow's lipid composition is structurally similar to human sebum, it may integrate more readily into the skin's own lipid matrix than some synthetic alternatives, though individual tolerance varies.

Adeps bovis is typically used as an emollient base in creams, balms, and oils. Apply to clean, damp skin to maximise hydration-locking benefits. A small amount goes a long way due to its occlusive nature. It suits evening application or use on particularly dry areas, though some may find it too heavy for daytime or oily zones. Patch test first if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin, as individual tolerance varies.
