What Is Adipic Acid?

Adipic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid commonly used in cosmetic formulations as a pH buffer and masking agent. It works to neutralise alkaline ingredients and maintain stable pH levels within a product, which is important for both product stability and skin compatibility.

In skincare, adipic acid serves a functional rather than active role. It does not directly target skin concerns but instead helps ensure that other active ingredients remain effective and that the overall formulation is well-tolerated by the skin.

How It Works

Adipic acid functions as a buffer by neutralising excess alkalinity in formulations. When a product becomes too alkaline, it can disrupt the skin's natural pH and compromise the effectiveness of active ingredients. Adipic acid donates hydrogen ions to bring the pH into a more skin-friendly range, typically between 4.5 and 5.5.

It also acts as a masking agent, helping to conceal or reduce any unpleasant odour that other ingredients in the formula might contribute, improving the sensory experience of using the product.

Clinical Evidence & References

Adipic acid has a well-established safety profile in cosmetic use. Research demonstrates very low acute toxicity and minimal skin irritation potential when applied topically at typical concentrations. Studies in animals showed no skin sensitisation, and it does not cause genetic damage.

However, there is limited published evidence specifically examining adipic acid's direct effects on skin health or aesthetics, as its role is primarily functional rather than therapeutic. Its benefit lies in enabling other active ingredients to work optimally by maintaining formulation integrity and appropriate pH.

How to Use

Adipic acid is a background ingredient — you will not need to adjust usage based on this component alone. Products containing it can typically be used as directed for the formulation type (serum, moisturiser, etc.). If you are sensitive to acidic products generally, patch test first, though irritation from adipic acid specifically is uncommon at cosmetic concentrations.

Safety & Precautions

Adipic acid is generally well-tolerated in skincare products at typical concentrations. It poses minimal irritation risk and is not a known skin sensitiser. Those with very sensitive skin should patch test new products, as with any formulation.
