What Is Allantoin Calcium Pantothenate?
Allantoin calcium pantothenate is a combination ingredient that pairs allantoin—a naturally occurring compound found in comfrey root—with calcium pantothenate (a form of pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5). This pairing creates a single ingredient that functions as both a skin conditioner and protectant.
The allantoin component is known for its ability to support skin healing and smoothing, whilst the pantothenic acid derivative contributes to skin barrier function and hydration. Together, they work to calm and protect the skin's surface.
How It Works
Allantoin is believed to promote skin healing by encouraging cell turnover and supporting the skin's natural repair mechanisms. Pantothenic acid (from the calcium pantothenate component) plays a role in maintaining the skin barrier by supporting the production of ceramides and other lipids essential for moisture retention and protection against irritants.
When combined, these two components appear to complement each other—one supporting active healing processes whilst the other reinforces the skin's structural integrity.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research suggests that allantoin, when combined with other soothing and protective ingredients such as bisabolol and panthenol, may help modulate skin inflammation and reduce erythema (redness) in response to stressors like UV exposure. A study examining a silicone gel formulation containing allantoin, dexpanthenol and heparin showed significant improvements in scar appearance and reduction in inflammatory markers in a hypertrophic scarring model.
However, most existing evidence focuses on allantoin and panthenol as part of multi-ingredient formulations rather than this specific combination in isolation. More direct clinical data on allantoin calcium pantothenate alone would help clarify its individual contribution to skin health.
