What Is Allantoin Paba?

Allantoin PABA is a hybrid molecule that combines allantoin (a naturally occurring compound found in comfrey root) with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), a chemical UV filter. This combination allows the ingredient to function both as a skin conditioner and a sun protection agent.

In skincare formulations, allantoin PABA is primarily used for its skin-soothing and photoprotective properties, though it is less commonly seen in modern formulations as newer UV filters have become preferred for stability and efficacy.

How It Works

The PABA component absorbs ultraviolet radiation and converts it to heat, providing photoprotection. The allantoin component works alongside this by conditioning the skin surface, potentially enhancing moisture retention and skin texture.

Allantoin is thought to work by promoting cell proliferation and supporting the skin's natural repair processes, whilst also providing humectant properties that help bind water to the stratum corneum.

Clinical Evidence & References

Allantoin has a longer history of use in wound healing and skin repair applications, with some evidence supporting its soothing and conditioning effects. However, specific clinical data on allantoin PABA as a combined ingredient in cosmetic formulations is limited.

As a UV filter, PABA was once widely used but has largely been replaced in modern sunscreens by more photostable alternatives. The evidence supporting its efficacy in cosmetic products is established, though it is less commonly studied in contemporary research compared to newer UV absorbers.

How to Use

If using a product containing allantoin PABA for sun protection, apply generously and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. In general skincare products, use as directed on the packaging. Allantoin PABA is best suited to daytime formulations where UV protection is desired.

Safety & Precautions

Allantoin PABA is generally well-tolerated, though some individuals may experience sensitivity to PABA. Avoid contact with eyes. Those with known PABA sensitivity should check formulation details before use.
