What Is Aloesin?
Aloesin is an active compound extracted from aloe vera plants. It belongs to a group of naturally occurring molecules found in the plant's gel and latex, and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to address skin injuries and inflammatory conditions.
In skincare formulations, aloesin functions as a skin conditioning agent. It is thought to work by interacting with cellular signalling pathways involved in skin repair and regeneration, though most research to date has been conducted in laboratory and animal models rather than extensive human clinical trials.
How It Works
Aloesin appears to influence skin healing by modulating cellular signalling pathways, particularly those involved in cell movement and tissue repair. In laboratory studies, it has been shown to activate specific proteins (Smad molecules and MAPKs) that regulate how skin cells migrate and regenerate.
The research suggests it may also work by reducing inflammatory responses in the skin, which can otherwise delay healing. However, most mechanistic data comes from in vitro and animal studies, so the extent of these effects in human skin remains to be fully established.
Clinical Evidence & References
Evidence for aloesin's efficacy comes primarily from laboratory and animal model studies. Research shows promising activity in cell cultures and wound healing models in mice, where it has demonstrated effects on cell migration and signalling pathways associated with tissue repair.
Clinical evidence in humans is more limited. Whilst aloe vera has a long history of traditional use for skin healing and injury, isolating the specific contribution of aloesin in real-world skincare is challenging. More robust human clinical trials would help clarify its practical benefit in cosmetic formulations.

How to Use
Aloesin is typically found in serums, creams, and targeted treatments rather than as a standalone ingredient. Use as directed by your product instructions, usually once or twice daily. It pairs well with hydrating and soothing ingredients and may be particularly useful in routines focused on barrier repair or post-procedural care.
