What Is Aluminum Chlorohydrate?
Aluminum chlorohydrate (ACH) is an inorganic salt derived from aluminium. It functions as an antiperspirant agent, distinct from deodorants, which work by actively reducing the volume of sweat produced rather than masking odour. When applied topically, ACH works at the level of the sweat gland to inhibit moisture secretion.
The ingredient is found in a small proportion of skincare products, primarily antiperspirant formulations. It typically appears at concentrations between 10% and 25%, though this varies by product type and intended use.
How It Works
Aluminum chlorohydrate works through a process called hydrolysis. When applied to skin, it releases aluminium ions that form complexes with proteins in the sweat duct, effectively creating a temporary blockade. This prevents sweat from reaching the skin surface.
Because this mechanism is inherently acidifying, formulations containing ACH require careful buffering with pH regulators and moisturising agents to maintain skin comfort and minimise irritation.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research confirms that aluminum chlorohydrate is an effective antiperspirant agent. In vitro studies using Franz diffusion cells have measured aluminium uptake through human skin, demonstrating that intact skin provides a reasonable barrier to transdermal absorption. However, the degree of absorption varies and may increase if skin barrier function is compromised.
There remains ongoing scientific discussion regarding systemic aluminium exposure and potential health implications. Current evidence suggests that transdermal absorption from topical antiperspirants is limited, but the evidence base is not extensive. If you have concerns about aluminium exposure, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable.
How to Use
Apply aluminum chlorohydrate products to clean, dry skin for optimal efficacy. Because the ingredient is acidifying, avoid using it on irritated or compromised skin, and always ensure your skincare routine includes a protective moisturiser with emollients. If dryness develops, scale back frequency or consider alternating with days of non-use to allow skin recovery.
