Aluminum zirconium pentachlorohydrex gly is a coordinated complex of aluminium and zirconium salts, formulated as a chlorohydrate. It's commonly used in antiperspirant and deodorant products, where it works to reduce sweat production and minimise odour-causing bacteria.

This ingredient is typically found in concentrations between 15% and 18% in antiperspirant formulations. It's a synthetic compound created specifically for cosmetic use rather than derived from natural sources.

The ingredient works through a two-part mechanism. When applied to skin, the aluminium zirconium complex reacts with moisture to form a gel or precipitate within the sweat ducts. This physical blockage temporarily reduces the flow of perspiration to the skin's surface.

Additionally, the zirconium component contributes an astringent action—a mild protein-binding effect that creates a tightening sensation on the skin. This combination makes it particularly suited to products designed to minimise visible pores and reduce moisture on the skin's surface.

Apply to clean, dry skin, typically to the underarms or other areas prone to perspiration. It is most effective when applied to completely dry skin before dressing. Allow the product to dry fully before contact with clothing to avoid staining. For best results, some formulations are designed for application at night, allowing the ingredient to form its barrier overnight.
