Amniotic Fluid

Amniotic fluid is the liquid that surrounds a developing fetus during pregnancy. In skincare formulations, it is used in processed or extracted form as a humectant and skin-conditioning agent. The fluid itself is approximately 98-99% water, with its chemical composition varying depending on gestational stage, and contains various solutes and bioactive compounds.

In cosmetic applications, amniotic fluid functions primarily as a moisturising agent, helping to draw water into the skin and support hydration. It is also listed as a skin conditioner, meaning it is intended to improve the feel and appearance of the skin's surface.

As a humectant, amniotic fluid draws water from deeper layers of the skin and the surrounding environment into the stratum corneum, helping to maintain hydration. This mechanism is similar to other water-binding ingredients used in moisturisers.

Research into amniotic fluid-derived stem cells suggests they may influence skin regeneration pathways through exosomal signalling at a cellular level. However, it is important to note that most cosmetic formulations use processed amniotic fluid rather than live stem cells, so the extent to which these mechanisms apply in topical skincare products remains unclear.

Amniotic fluid is typically found in serums, moisturisers, and hydrating treatments. Use as directed on the product label. As with any new skincare ingredient, introduce it gradually and observe how your skin responds, particularly if you have sensitive skin.
