What Is Amorphophallus Konjac Root Extract?
Amorphophallus konjac root extract is derived from the konjac plant, a tuber native to Southeast Asia. In skincare, it functions as both a humectant—a substance that draws water into the skin—and a film former, which means it creates a protective layer on the skin's surface to help lock in hydration.
The extract contains polysaccharides that are responsible for these hydrating and film-forming properties. It's increasingly used in moisturisers, serums, and hydrating products as a natural alternative to some synthetic humectants.
How It Works
Konjac extract works through two complementary mechanisms. As a humectant, its polysaccharide structure is hygroscopic—it has an affinity for water molecules and draws them from the dermis into the epidermis, thereby increasing skin hydration. This effect is most pronounced when the surrounding environment has adequate humidity.
Simultaneously, the film-forming properties create a thin, permeable layer on the skin's surface. This barrier helps reduce water evaporation, ensuring that moisture drawn into the skin is retained rather than lost. This dual action makes it particularly useful in hydrating formulations.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research on konjac extract in cosmetic formulations is limited compared to more established humectants like glycerol or hyaluronic acid. However, the ingredient has a long history of use in food and traditional medicine, and preliminary cosmetic studies suggest it does deliver hydrating benefits comparable to other plant-derived humectants.
More rigorous clinical trials would strengthen the evidence base. At present, the ingredient is best considered a supportive hydrating agent rather than a primary or transformative treatment, though it may contribute meaningfully to overall formulation efficacy when combined with other humectants and occlusive agents.
How to Use
Konjac extract is most effective when used on damp or freshly cleansed skin, as this maximises its humectant action. It works well layered with other hydrating ingredients and is typically best sealed in with a moisturiser or lightweight oil to prevent the moisture it draws in from evaporating. There is no need to restrict usage frequency; it can be used twice daily without concern.
