What Is Andrographis Paniculata Extract?
Andrographis paniculata extract is derived from a plant traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. In skincare, it functions as an astringent and skin conditioning agent, working at the cellular level to support the skin's foundational structures.
The extract contains bioactive compounds that interact with skin cells and the dermal-epidermal junction — the critical interface between the epidermis and dermis that maintains skin firmness and resilience.
How It Works
The extract appears to work by signalling skin cells to maintain and reinforce the structural proteins that keep skin looking firm and resilient. It does this partly by boosting production of collagen IV and laminin, two proteins that form the basement membrane — the scaffolding between the epidermis and dermis.
Additionally, it may help regulate enzymes that naturally break down these proteins, and supports the function of epidermal stem cells that drive the skin's self-renewal process. This happens without disrupting normal skin cell turnover or differentiation.
Clinical Evidence & References
Cell culture and human skin explant studies suggest andrographis paniculata extract can enhance the structural composition of the dermal-epidermal junction and preserve the function of keratinocyte stem cells. These early-stage findings are promising for supporting skin resilience and natural renewal.
However, clinical evidence remains limited. Most research to date has been conducted in laboratory settings rather than in large-scale human trials, so the extent of benefits visible in real-world use is not yet fully established. Further research on topical efficacy and long-term effects would be valuable.
How to Use
Andrographis paniculata extract is typically used as a supporting ingredient within serums, essences, or moisturisers rather than as a standalone treatment. Follow the instructions on your specific product for frequency of use. It generally combines well with other skin-supporting ingredients like peptides, antioxidants, and hydrating humectants.
