Angelica Archangelica Extract

Angelica archangelica extract is derived from the root of the angelica plant, a herb with a long history in traditional medicine across Europe and Asia. The extract contains naturally occurring compounds called furocoumarins, which are responsible for many of its biochemical properties in skincare formulations.

In skincare, this ingredient functions primarily as a skin conditioner. It is used in relatively small quantities—found in approximately 0.1% of skincare products—and is often included in formulations targeting photoprotection and maintaining skin integrity.

When skin is exposed to UV radiation, cells release enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which break down collagen and contribute to visible ageing. Research suggests that angelica archangelica extract may work by suppressing the production of these enzymes, thereby reducing collagen degradation at a cellular level.

The mechanism appears to involve modulation of inflammatory signalling pathways that are activated by UV exposure, helping skin cells maintain their structural integrity under photoprotective stress.

As angelica archangelica extract is typically used in very low concentrations within formulations, it works best as part of a comprehensive skincare routine that includes dedicated sunscreen. It is unlikely to be a standalone active ingredient and should be viewed as a supporting ingredient within broader photoprotection and anti-ageing strategies.
