What Is Anhydrogalactose?

Anhydrogalactose is a monosaccharide derived from red seaweed polysaccharides. It is a simple sugar molecule that forms when agarose (a structural component of red algae) is broken down. In skincare formulations, it functions as a humectant, antioxidant, and skin conditioning agent.

The ingredient draws moisture into the skin and helps maintain hydration levels. Research suggests it may also help protect skin from oxidative stress, though its primary role in most formulations is hydration support.

Benefits for Your Skin

How It Works

Anhydrogalactose works as a humectant by attracting water molecules from deeper skin layers and the environment, binding them to the skin surface. This helps to plump the stratum corneum and reduce transepidermal water loss.

As an antioxidant, preliminary research suggests it may inhibit tyrosinase (an enzyme involved in melanin production) and neutralise free radicals, though the extent of these effects in real-world skincare use remains to be fully understood.

Clinical Evidence & References

In vitro studies indicate that anhydrogalactose and related compounds derived from red seaweed demonstrate antioxidant and tyrosinase-inhibiting properties. Research has shown these compounds do not cause cytotoxicity to skin cells at typical cosmetic concentrations.

A 2015 safety assessment by the Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety concluded that anhydrogalactose is safe for use in cosmetic products at current concentrations and practices. However, human clinical studies directly measuring skin brightening or anti-ageing effects in vivo are limited, so claims should be considered preliminary.

How to Use

Anhydrogalactose is typically found in serums, essences, hydrating toners, and moisturisers where it works alongside other humectants and actives. It blends well with other ingredients and requires no special handling. Use as directed by the product formulation, usually once or twice daily. Layer hydrating products from lightest to heaviest texture for optimal absorption.

Safety & Precautions

Anhydrogalactose is considered safe for cosmetic use. It is non-toxic and well-tolerated across all skin types, with no known significant cautions or contraindications at recommended concentrations.
