Apo-Lactoferrin

Apo-lactoferrin is a naturally occurring protein found in bodily fluids, including milk and saliva. In its apo form, it has released its iron cargo, which allows it to function as an antioxidant and protective agent in skincare formulations.

The ingredient works to condition and support skin and hair by helping to neutralise free radicals and maintain moisture. It is sometimes included in formulations to support skin barrier function and provide gentle nourishment.

Apo-lactoferrin exerts its benefits primarily through its iron-binding capacity. In its apo (iron-depleted) form, it can bind free iron in the skin, which would otherwise generate harmful free radicals through oxidative reactions. By sequestering this iron, the ingredient reduces oxidative stress at a cellular level.

Additionally, as a protein, apo-lactoferrin has emollient properties that help condition the skin's surface, supporting hydration and the appearance of smoothness.

Apo-lactoferrin is typically used as a supporting ingredient rather than a primary active, so it is unlikely to be the headline component in a formulation. It works well within layered skincare routines and does not generally require special application techniques. Use as directed on the product label, often as part of a daily moisturiser or serum.
