What Is Arginine Glutamate?
Arginine glutamate is an ion pair—a chemical structure formed by combining the amino acids arginine and glutamic acid. This pairing improves the solubility and skin penetration of glutamic acid, which would otherwise struggle to dissolve effectively in cosmetic formulations.
In skincare, it functions as a skin and hair conditioning agent. Glutamic acid is recognised for its role in supporting keratinocyte (skin cell) proliferation and collagen synthesis, the structural protein responsible for skin firmness and elasticity.
How It Works
Glutamic acid is a key amino acid involved in skin cell growth and protein synthesis. When paired with arginine as an ion pair, the compound becomes more soluble and permeable, allowing it to penetrate the skin more effectively than glutamic acid alone.
Once absorbed, arginine glutamate appears to stimulate keratinocytes (the predominant cells in the outer layer of skin) to proliferate and regenerate more efficiently. It may also signal fibroblasts—the cells responsible for producing collagen—to increase their synthesis activity, supporting the skin's structural integrity.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research suggests arginine glutamate may support wound healing and skin recovery. Studies in controlled settings have shown it can enhance keratinocyte proliferation and collagen production, with one investigation demonstrating approximately 94% wound recovery at lower concentrations in laboratory conditions.
Clinical evidence in humans remains limited. A small pilot study of burn scar patients reported improvements in itching and skin barrier function after four weeks of twice-daily application, though the sample size was modest and further research would strengthen these findings. The ingredient appears most studied in the context of post-procedure skin recovery rather than routine skincare.

How to Use
Arginine glutamate is typically found in serums, creams, and targeted recovery products. Apply to clean, dry skin as directed on the product label. Since many formulations containing this ingredient are designed for compromised or sensitised skin, patch testing is sensible if you have very reactive skin. Consistent use over several weeks is likely necessary to observe benefits.
