What Is Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most effective over-the-counter treatments for acne. It works primarily by releasing oxygen into the pores, which kills the anaerobic P. acnes bacteria that cannot survive in oxygenated environments.

Unlike antibiotics, bacteria cannot develop resistance to benzoyl peroxide because its mechanism of action involves oxidation rather than targeting specific bacterial processes. This makes it effective for long-term acne management.

Benzoyl peroxide also has mild keratolytic (exfoliating) properties that help prevent pores from becoming clogged. It is available in strengths from 2.5% to 10%, though research shows 2.5% can be just as effective as higher concentrations with less irritation.

Side effects include dryness, peeling, and potential bleaching of fabrics and hair. Start with lower concentrations and gradually increase as tolerated. Works well when combined with adapalene or niacinamide.
