What Is Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract?
Curcuma longa (turmeric) root extract is a spice that’s best known for its use in cooking. However, it has a long history of use in skin care and is still used in many cultures today. The chief component of turmeric that gives it its characteristic yellow color is curcumin. Curcumin has been extensively studied for its antioxidant and soothing properties.\n\nTurmeric and its derivatives have been shown to interrupt signaling messages in skin’s surface that trigger signs of irritation. It’s also been shown to have a calming effect that may be of benefit for breakout-prone skin.\n\nIn its raw form, turmeric can be sensitizing if applied to skin. However, in skin care formulations it is typically used as an extract where the concentration of its volatile aromatic components (the parts that can be sensitizing) is low, so it is not considered to be a risk for sensitization.\n\nLook for turmeric extract in products that are packaged in opaque, air-restrictive containers to preserve its antioxidant benefits.
