What Is Kojic Acid?

Kojic acid is a natural brightening agent derived from fungi, particularly Aspergillus oryzae, which is used in the fermentation of rice to produce sake. It has become a popular alternative to hydroquinone for treating hyperpigmentation.

Kojic acid works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production. By blocking this enzyme, it prevents new pigmentation from forming while allowing existing dark spots to gradually fade through natural skin turnover.

While effective, kojic acid can be sensitizing to some skin types, causing redness, irritation, or contact dermatitis. Kojic dipalmitate is a more stable derivative that may cause less irritation while still providing brightening benefits.

For best results, use kojic acid in concentrations of 1-4% and combine with other brightening ingredients like vitamin C, arbutin, or niacinamide. Always use sunscreen to prevent new pigmentation from forming.

. Naturally produced by certain fungi, kojic acid helps improve the appearance of discolouration and skin brightness. It addresses visible sun damage, age spots, and uneven tone. With antimicrobial properties, it can help prevent blemishes and breakouts whilst combating environmental damage and inflammation.
