What Is Mandelic Acid?

Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds. Its larger molecular size compared to glycolic acid means it penetrates the skin more slowly and evenly, resulting in less irritation while still providing effective exfoliation.

This gentle AHA is particularly suitable for sensitive skin types, darker skin tones (which are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), and those new to chemical exfoliation. It provides the benefits of AHAs without the stinging or redness often associated with stronger acids.

Mandelic acid has antibacterial properties that make it especially effective for acne-prone skin. It can help reduce breakouts while simultaneously addressing post-acne marks and uneven skin tone.

Start with concentrations around 5-10% and use 2-3 times per week, gradually increasing frequency as tolerated. As with all AHAs, sunscreen use is essential as mandelic acid increases photosensitivity.
