What Is Panthenyl Triacetate?
Panthenyl triacetate (PTA) is a synthetic ester of panthenol (AKA pro-vitamin B5) used in skin care for its soothing and humectant properties. When applied to skin, panthenyl triacetate converts into panthenol. Unlike panthenol, which is water and alcohol soluble, panthenyl triacetate is oil soluble, meaning it can penetrate deeper into skin to help calm, hydrate and revitalize. Studies demonstrate that not only does panthenyl triacetate get further within skin, but it also lasts longer within skin, steadily releasing panthenol. Research has outlined panthenyl triacetate’s ability to help heal wounds and soothe. Its performance as a skin metabolism boosting agent is particularly helpful as an integral part of skin regeneration. Its soothing and hydrating properties make it particularly beneficial for reactive or sensitive skin. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel reviewed panthenyl triacetate in a 2022 report, where it detailed common usage levels (0.003%-2.0%) and deemed the ingredient as safe for use in current concentrations in cosmetics.
