What Is Prunus Lannesiana (Cherry Blossom) Flower Extract?

Prunus lannesiana (cherry blossom) flower extract is derived from the ornamental cherry blossom tree that’s native to east Asia, most notably Japan. The pink-to-white flowers are believed to be a sign of good fortune but it’s benefit for skin is due to antioxidant compounds, including anthocyanins, flavonoids, caffeic acid, and quercertin derivatives. Research has revealed cherry blossom flowers applied to skin can help inhibit advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), collagen damageing compounds that also put skin at increased risk for hyperpigmentation. Reducing these compounds influence on skin’s uppermost layers will help keep skin looking youthful and even-toned. In vitro and in vivo tests have shown that cherry blossom extract offers soothing properties.

A 2% concentration of this extract helped reduce signs of irritation from skin exposed to strong detergents and other irritants. Lower concentrations of this extract were shown to help protect skin cells from free radical damage when exposed to UVB light. Usage levels of Prunus lannesiana (cherry blossom) flower extract are typically 1–3% where it’s part of a water-based blend. The actual content of this specific extract lower, a testament to this antioxidant’s potency on skin. This ingredient is sometimes referred to as Sakura or Japanese Cherry.
