What Is Squalane?
Squalane is a stable, saturated form of squalene, a lipid naturally produced by human sebaceous glands. As we age, our natural squalene production decreases, making topical application beneficial for maintaining skin hydration and suppleness.
Unlike many oils, squalane has a lightweight texture and a molecular structure very similar to our skin sebum, allowing it to absorb quickly without leaving a greasy residue. This makes it suitable for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin.
Squalane is an excellent emollient that helps prevent moisture loss by forming a protective barrier on the skin surface. It also has antioxidant properties and can help improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines.
Modern squalane is typically derived from olives or sugarcane, making it a sustainable alternative to shark-derived squalene. It is non-comedogenic and stable, making it an ideal carrier oil for other skincare ingredients.
