What Is Tranexamic Acid?

Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine that has emerged as a powerful treatment for stubborn hyperpigmentation. Originally used in medicine to reduce bleeding, it has proven highly effective at treating melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Unlike many brightening ingredients that only target melanin production, tranexamic acid works by interrupting the interaction between keratinocytes and melanocytes, preventing the signals that trigger excess pigmentation. This unique mechanism makes it effective for UV-induced and hormonal pigmentation.

Tranexamic acid is gentle and well-tolerated, making it suitable for sensitive skin types that may react to other brightening agents. It works well in combination with other brightening ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin C, and alpha arbutin for enhanced results.

Typically used at concentrations of 2-5% in skincare products. Results are usually visible within 4-8 weeks of consistent use.
