What Is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is one of the most researched and proven antioxidants in skincare. This water-soluble vitamin is essential for collagen synthesis and provides powerful protection against environmental damage from UV rays and pollution.
As an antioxidant, Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals that cause premature ageing, making it a cornerstone of anti-ageing skincare. It also inhibits melanin production, making it highly effective at brightening the skin and fading dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
Vitamin C exists in several forms in skincare products. L-ascorbic acid is the most potent but also the most unstable. More stable derivatives include ascorbyl glucoside, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, and ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, which convert to active vitamin C in the skin.
For optimal results, look for products with vitamin C concentrations between 10-20%, formulated at a pH below 3.5 for L-ascorbic acid. It works synergistically with vitamin E and ferulic acid, which enhance its stability and effectiveness.
